A Brief History

(Click pics to enlarge)

The Destination is located in the industrial part of Midland, Texas as part of the Stockard Acres addition.

With its vintage, rustic motif, The Destination is an expression of who we are. We’ve repurposed, revamped, rescued and reused a blend of salvaged goods ranging from car parts to large architectural pieces and turned them into a fascinating combination of very uniquely themed personal patios, each with their own charm.

Originally, the property where The Destination is situated was an alley between barracks housing World War II US Army bombardier school cadets in 1942 for the Midland Army Air Field (Sloan Field). Alongside that was an abandoned lumber yard known as Andy’s Lumber. From this, a vision emerged out of a desire to transform a large and useless weeded space into a masterpiece.

Located alongside the entrance, La Catrina Lounge comfortably seats 10 in an inviting arrangement of oversized wood furniture built from refurbished wood pallets along with a coffee table crafted from an old piece of mesquite and end tables made from reclaimed 4X4 posts, old lumber and large oak planks. The area is finished with a brick paver floor giving off a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of being on Main Street.

This Lounge is also guarded by a beautiful and life-size Catrina, one of Mexico’s great dames, as she protects and presides regally in the corner watching over her guests. She is also accompanied by other smaller Catrina’s that have made this lounge area their home.

69 WInnie

A vintage ’69 Winnebago travel trailer advertised on Craigslist made its home at The Destination after it was found in south Midland.

She was placed on a pad, leveled and blocked to make her a permanent addition that now serves as a retail shop to provide souvenirs, jewelry and clothes.

When she arrived, Winnie was gutted and remodeled with a new floor, walls and a ceiling. A tin roof shields her from the elements and she is surrounded by a raised wooden deck that serves as a bar top. Her pad was finally completed with a front lower wood deck home to a picnic table and wide open space to enjoy the sun or stars at night.

As the saying goes, “a crowded camper is better than an empty castle”.

The Canned Ham Sikar Lounge

(Click pics to enlarge)

This 1959 canned ham camper trailer was found in an estate sale in the 1000 block of Princeton Avenue at a mere cost of $50. It took a team of six people an entire day and quite an effort to remove it from the backyard and through the alley!

This camper is hitched behind the ‘69 Winnie as if it’s being pulled down the road and like Winnie, it too has been retrofitted for its new purpose as a cigar shop.

Inside you will find a humidor with a selection of fine cigars, ceramic tile floor, Spanish cedar wall panels, leather sofas and chairs to enjoy a fine cigar and a cocktail.

EL ESCONDIDO

El Escondido is Spanish for “the hidden one” and one of The Destination’s largest patios, which was inspired by a ranch belonging to our uncle situated deep in the mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico.

Many of its furnishings are family heirlooms and with massive wood columns, cedar rafters, a round wagon wheel chandelier, old doors and windows, a brick and plaster wall and recycled floor bricks, El Escondido stands tall as a blend of traditional Mexican country, ranch and Western flair
